Re: Frenzy at Free State

The weather forecast has gotten much worse. It looks like non-stop rain and snow and high winds all day tomorrow. I don't see any chance of getting in even 4 rounds of SSC to make a legal contest, so I'm cancelling the event.

MARKS Spring Shootout, Salisbury, MD

15 pilots showed up for a great SSC contest at the MARKS club field in Salisbury, MD. It was a bit breezy to start the day, but that didn't seem to cause any real problems during the day. Pilots picture: http://wheek.org/airplanes/2010/10sal1a.jpg The flying continues to get better and better. Even ...

Re: Alternative Engines?

Count me as someone who is really impressed with Magnum listening like they have been, and someone who's used their engines for quite a while, even if all my old Magnum .25XL and .28XL's are in storage at the moment. But I'll also be quite happy if OS brings the FX back into production, at least for...

Re: Sussex Streamer Cuts, DE

I forgot to mention, that vapor trail is pretty cool, but obviously just a jet contrail that happened to get into the picture. Couldn't have staged it better if we'd tried though

Re: Sussex Streamer Cuts, DE

Actually, that plane was oddly flyable with no horizontal. I still had ailerons and throttle, and the plane was stable enough that I actually more "landed" than "crashed" in the bushes after rolling upside down to drop altitude faster, then picking a soft, safe spot to go into th...

Sussex Streamer Cuts, DE

The opening contest of the Mid-Atlantic region is in the books. 14 pilots showed up, and 6 rounds of SSC were flown. We had 4 new pilots flying in their first contest. Pilots picture: http://www.wheek.org/airplanes/2010/sac1a.jpg Left to right: 1st place Kirk Adams, 2nd Jason Yoder, 3rd David Smithg...

Re: Alternative Engines?

Can you bolt on a MAS 10x4 or APC 10x3 with a standard muffler and see how it tachs? One of the things I really like about the OS FX is that it turns up on the pipe with the small props for the fast classes, but also has the torque to turn the bigger props for limited B and 2548, unlike the Webra .2...

Re: Mag 15 XLS Head Shims

You're not going to like my answer I suspect. But I've been using a T-pin to basically poke along the outside edge of the groove at an area where the shim has folded up along the edge as you describe. Once it's up a little, I can usually shake it out into my hand. Sometimes the shim dies in the proc...

I still have been too lame to get a picture of the exhaust mod I have in place on my XLS, but I did measure the tubing insert. It appears to be a bit of .25" o.d. tubing. I know I got it at the local hobby store, so it's K&S tubing, nothing special or hard to find (I think). The i.d. was so...

I haven't noticed any problems due to temp from the exhaust restriction. But I haven't done anything close to scientific testing, I don't even have a measurement of head temp. It's a small restriction though, just one bit of tubing. I'll have to get some measurements and pictures for you. I'm also r...

Street Brawl 2009

Well, the forecasters called it right. It's rained and rained and rained for the last few weeks, then the morning of the contest, the rain turned to snow. What can you do? FLY COMBAT! that's what you can do. So, 5 pilots (of questionable sanity) stuck it out, and flew 6 rounds of SSC combat. On a mu...

I honestly think I was one of the first guys running the .15XLS in competition, I bought a couple of them right when they came out, since I'd been running the .15XL for years and years, and always thought it better than the LA. To detune my .15 XLS, I have a bit of aluminum tubing JB Welded into the...

MARKS Fall Shootout

We had bad weather, but 16 pilots showed up and had a great time despite the on and off rain showers. The rain really only affected one heat, when a quick burst of rain right after the start caused the streamers to get wet and some fell off. Other than that, the rain really wasn't a problem. There w...
