Awesome! Congrats on the flight Gary! I seem to remember keeping my elevator around the 35 degree mark. I don't know what that converts to in inches but as Pete puts it, its' "sporty" at that setting. Ailerons are a minimum 45 degrees but more like 50+ to compensate for flex at speed. Once...

I went Uber conservative on the CG and when it was obvious how nose heavy it was I just changed to a standard spinner instead of a heavy hub and called it good.

Anything past the 3" mark gives negligable results and starts having major stability issues. The thing turns tight enough as it is. "Bullet Time" on a Piranha is fine but for the Mako it isn't so much fun

Well, after taking a centerpunch just aft of the wing saddle I was left with a lawn dart. This was my very first one I laid up so durability was yet untested. This is a layer of .75oz and a layer of 4oz glass with a couple CF tow stringers that didn't go past the canopy. Very flimsy and not nearly a...

That looks like a good start. I'm assuming you would use 2 servos per wing. I have seen that tape alone is good enough to hold the wings together but not tough enough for midairs of course. I do like the hardwood joiner in the middle. Looks promising. My first suggestion would be to have something t...

Big congrats to Terry and John for the wins. I'm sure they were well earned. My day was just one of those you want to quickly forget. After doing a day of test flying Friday I was feeling good about the contest. Next day go for the test flight and PLUNK! right into the ground. PLUNK's 2,3 and 4 foll...

The first thing you need to do is wipe it down with acetone to remove the wax and PVA mold release, then hit it with some 400 grit sandpaper to give the paint something to grab hold of. If it's been painted in the mold do a test section to see if it'll take the paint off. Those 2 things will do wond...

I always liked the fact that you could trim in some R/L thrust with a tug of the motor mount!!!!! I use 1/4-20's threaded into the wood and then nuts as well but they hold the landing skid ala Piranha on as well as keeping my engine extra secure. After i ejected that one engine from a tight turn I'm...

For excess wire I just make the rx pocket larger and cram it all in there w/a ziptie to hold it all neatly. Definietely the 10lb/5lb thing going on though. You could also let your aileron servos go out a bit more to chew up some wire. BTW Gary, isn't the angle of your servos going to have the linkag...

I forgot to add. Since this damn plane is called a Mako, I figured it was only right that the vertical fins at least resembled a shark fin...

Let's see if I can add anything to the already great methods of building one of these monsters. I use a 4 cell AA battery pack and mount that on the centersection just left of the ply engine mount. I just carve, router or chew out a section large enough for the battery to fit in there flush with the...

Ed, thank you for that link. Lots of very cool paint schemes.

Darin, I'll let you know what version I'm building when I receive my fuses.
