Go Devil Elevator horn breakage

Post by Oehrle »

I have just ended my third year flying Go Devils
in Open B combat. I have noticed that the elevator
control horn is prone to failure and I am not sure
why. I use Du Bro horns in line with the servo and mounted on the
bottom of the elevator. They do take some punishment on
landing but they seem to fail when flying.

Any feedback from other Go Devil users is appreciated.

Thaman

the push rod on all my GO Devils IS
between the booms. I will have to check
closer but on a quick take, mounting on top
may not work due to angle and the cross
boom dowel.

Good point Terry[:)]

I've seen the Slope Combat guys double the horns, and/or double the clevises.

Nothing like a little redundancy.

If your wiley enough you can also make them top/bottom horned for less load on the horn.

I'll see if I can find a pic of the double clevis deal.

Gary,
The controll horn goes in top of the elevator. The 440 push rod goes between the booms and between the fins. The push rod clears the rear dowel no problem.

Parts for Indestructable Control Horns.

Dubro Horn Bracket 4-40 3/32"
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wt ... LXD947&P=M

4-40 x 1 1/2" bolts from Home Depot/Lowes

scraps of leftover pvc pipe cut in 1/2 x 1/2 squares, with 4-40 holes drilled through middle

4-40 plastic insert locknuts from any hardware store or buy a bag real cheap from MicroFasteners

While the 4-40 bolts will bend, they won't break..

Use the #6x32 socket head screws from Micro and they won't bend or break[:0]

This is the real deal for control horns.[^]

Put your PVC (or plywood) backing on the bolt, put it through the aileron or elevator, put on the top PVC plate, then the locking nut, twist on down, then add the Horn bracket...

Have them on my ailerons and elevator in this picture...

[^]A tad closer in maybe?[:D] Is the stud run through the aileron, and you use pvc plates for strength? Then the screw down thingy for the clevis? I have never used them, how do you keep them from twisting?

I buy the horns in the packaged kit and prefer the GreatPlanes. Dubro also makes some.

I'm with EK...I like the Great Planes "large" type. However, it doesn't matter which you use on the GoDevil when they are installed on the top of the elevator. There is no way to break 'em there....unless you get your tail feathers cut off....But that is highly unlikely.
