Great Lakes Combat - 8/9 & 8/10 2014

Post by lightning »

The weather gods smiled on Michigan last weekend and we had two picture perfect days for the Great Lakes Combat Championships - blue skies, light winds and 80 degrees!
Just as well as we had 5.2" of rain on Monday (an 89 year one day record!) resulting in widespread floods in the Detroit area.
We flew 8 rounds of SSC and 4 rounds of Gnat on Saturday, followed by 8 rounds of Limited B on Sunday.
The great weather brought out a good crowd of spectators, both club members and members of the public.
Pilots attended from Texas, Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, Wisconsin and Ontario, Canada as well as four from Michigan.

SSC we had 9 pilots, flying 6 up with three out in a rotating sequence for a total of 8 rounds.
The results.......
1 ) Eric Gilkey (MI) with 3884 points
2 ) David Smithgall (VA) with 3052 points
3 ) Tim Gillow with (VA) 1920 points
4 ) Brian Delahunty (KY) with 1464 points
5 ) Doug Goldman (WI) with 1352 points
6 ) Bob Loescher (OH) with 1288 points
7 ) Keith Jones (MI) with 920 points
8 ) Court Jarrett (TX) with 884 points
9 ) Stewart Holdsworth (Canada) with 800 points

Thanks to all the pilots who participated, (especially those who travelled a great distance to be here), to our club members who helped out with judging and to the RCCD kitchen staff for the outstanding on-site food service.
Thanks also to Jill Aldridge (who some of you may remember from the 2008-2012 NATS) who took care of heat sheets and scores plus educated some of the audience on what combat is all about.

It was a great event and was enjoyed by all, pilots and spectators alike.
My future step-son (Dave Aldridge) took 2200 photos - a sample of some in a slideshow is attached.....

I will add more once we have edited and shrunk them down to size.

Many thanks to Keith and the RCCD club for a very enjoyable event! I appreciated the chance to fly with friends old and new.

I'd also like to thank Keith and Jill for their hospitality during my visit.

With perfect weather, a great group to fly with, and little battle damage, the trip was well worth the drive!

Always a good meet with great competition. It was great to fly with Eric when my stuff was working right. I guess you can't patch up damage from the NATS the day before going to another meet! Hope to do better at Dog fight over Dovre.
I actually worked on a damaged wing yesterday.
I still haven't unloaded all the gear from the combat van.

Eric and I had a blast at this meet. The awesome weather didn't hurt any!!! Really enjoyed the Gnat combat- it was nice not to have to fret about "breaking out" for rpm. The nose-to-nose midair shown in the video you posted was BRUTAL!!!
