Real Flight 5.0

Post by gsjames »

I just got an email newsletter from the vendors of RealFlight informing me of the release of v 5.0 Apparently it includes several types of multi-player combat games including streamer combat. They say the upgrade from v 3.5 is $79. I "may" bite. Does anyone else have any info on this?

This could be a wonderful new way for me to waste time...[:)]

I got the same email Gary. I'm ready to bite. Geese, I live in Northern Ohio and it's snowed near here this weekend. I will likely bite within the month. Maybe I can duke it out with you all winter.

It sounds intriguing, but I want to see it in person, before I plop down $80. I have v 3.5 and I almost never use it because RC simulators get pretty boring pretty quickly. But if we can really fly fairly realistic RC combat via computer, then count me in.

ON THE OTHER HAND, to the best of my knowledge, Knife Edge Software never consulted with anyone in the RCCA before doing this so I am skeptical that they did it right. I'll have to see it before I purchase it.

I expect to see them at the Toledo show the first weekend in April. I already told my wife to get it for me for Christmas.[;)]

This clip is from Jim Bourke, a representive of Knife Edge Software, the makers of RealFlight. It is in response to my inquiry on the Knife Edge forums regarding the streamer combat feature of v 5.0

"The games that ship with G5 are not currently editable by customers.

So there is no way, currently, for you to change which aircraft is flown in the streamer cut event.

I don't normally discuss future plans for the software, because we sell the software as-is and do not promise that it will change. However, in this case I can say that allowing users to change the events is a fairly easy thing to do, and I think we can offer you that ability in the future. All of the events run through a scripting system, which allows for a lot of flexibility. We merely need to make it so that users can write their own scripts.

That said, if you purchase G5, understand that it does not currently allow users to customize the game scripts, and I am not in the position where I can promise that it will at any particular point in the future.

Jim"

I have been using realflight g5 for about a week now. It was great tonight. I won with 17 cuts. :o The first week was pretty tough. I had a lot of negative scores. If you fix the camera it is pretty realistic. The foamy streamer is like SSC or B class open design. The Mustang is like scale 2548. I haven't done the WWI stuff yet but it should be interesting. It's nice if you get a headset for about $15 at wal-mart. That way you can talk smack as you fly. My profile has my name as Longhaul. My desktop is only a year old and works great. I have had some guys online that have some problems because their equipment doesn't rev-up to competitive levels.

I got the Real Flight 5.0 Simulator for Christmas. The Combat games are very fun. I found a plane that resembles, and flys, very similar to a B class airplane. It can be found on KnifeEdge's Swap pages http://www.knifeedge.com/forums/downloads.php
The name of the plane is "SPAD Cat Tomcat EA" and was build by Terry Powell. Of course it has a streamer attached too!

My RealFlight Profile name is Kelly, hope to see you in the RealFlight Virtual world.

So, Boiler, do you think it's worth the $80? I'm on the fence, since I don't use the v3.5 that I have now, but with combat, it might be worth it. If I can't get REAL cuts perhaps I can get virtual cuts... :-)

Gary, are you kidding. I was flying combat while it was near 0 degrees wind chill outside. I didn't have to pay for any gas for my van and miss sleep to get to the computer. Also there were no entry fees. I got good home cooked meals as well. It's not perfect but the +'s outweigh the -'s by a mile. Oh, and I could do a complete rebuild in about one second. :D

Kelly, I usually get to the computer to play about 6:30 Eastern time. I plan on working on next season's spare wings during the earlier hours in addition to getting things done around the homestead that I neglected during the Combat Season.

I was just flying with Mikey untill his mother told him it was time for his bath. He was holding his own against me. I had as much fun as the little whipper snapper.

I actually read some of the manual yesterday. :o I've been frustrated by the sessions lasting only 10 minutes before going to a different field and plane for the next 10 minutes. Some of the fields are awful to see your plane from the pits or where you are standing. After reading how to set up as a host, I now have what I think to be the best combat site as far as sky and obstacles. (realflight ranch) I have set it up to fly the foamy which is similar to SSC and B combat followed by P51 streamer combat that flies like 2548. Each session lasts 30 minutes and then repeats. You actually get a chance to get used to the system and get cuts. It is best if you have the $15 headset from Wal Mart for smack talking or promotion of our web site for those that don't know about us. The name of the session is Chasing Tail.

Last night I got a little tired of perfect weather conditions. I turned the wind up to 20 mph with the foamies. Very similar to a windy day in SSC at 25 mph.
