Hi Ed,
Greetings from So.Ont.Canada.

The last few years our 'Demo Teams' had alot of fun at Airshows/Funflys. Seems spectators find R/C scale combat the most entertaining...even over TOC 1/3 scale aerobatic routines, turbines and wicked helicopter stunting.(I don't have to tell you guys how great R/C combat is ! hehehe)

Here are some things that have worked well:

-6 WW2 scale planes, hopefully 3 axis/3 allied. Different coloured streamers. Someone good on the PA system to get the crowd cheering for one side and able to make machine gun sounds... The 'winners' do victory rolls over the landing 'loosers'...the spectators love it. Cheers or Boos depending on the cut. Pilots need a good spotter to help line up on an enemy streamer.

-'Strafing Runs'. Using the Hattrick/Harner long skinny balloon method. Stick 6 or so mid field. During the combat demo round the anouncer yells "Ground Attack from left/right". Pilots disengage and make a pass at the balloons, hopefully right behind each other...then head back up to continue combat. Repeated several times during the 5-7min. Very Cool.
I found some skinny balloons at a Party Store that stand 4-5ft. tall when pumped up 'hard'. If you tape them to the holders they stay up in 15-20mph winds.

-WW1 combat demos. This was our first year trying it and got 10 pilots to our first match in Sept. During the year there were several demos with 2-3 planes up. Definatly great fun and impressive. Kind of like a slow motion combat ballet...The planes are great sport flyers too with rudder and landing gear...
We will try various forms of scoring, hopefully a 2on2 or 3on3 team concept. We are concentrating on getting the planes performing equally.

Organizing a demo and getting to it to an Airshow/FunFly is not that hard. The only painfull part is possibly only flying one flight that day!(at FunFlys we can get several rounds in) Most of our time is spent fielding questions about R/C combat from spectators and sport flyers...
Doing alot of Demos has definatly promoted our SIG within the R/C clubs around here. As a bonus we have more fields to host combat matches AND get more pilots to join us...!

Sounds like you guys are having fun too.
A B-17 with a light blue spinner and an old .40 towing an 80ft X 2in. streamer...able to drop 4 eggs...
Can anyone say Scramble ? ! ! ! hehehe

Take care, have fun,
