2013 NATS Schedule

Post by boiler »

The 2013 NATS schedule runs from July 16 to July19. That's Tue - Fri of a normal work week. You must register through the AMA by mail or phone. They are trying to get registration by the web but can't guarantee it as of today. It surprised many but I kept us eligible for 72 MHZ. After I emphasized our need to keep 72 , scale RC said they had two "older members" that weren't there last year because they didn't want to go to 2.4GHZ. So next year we won't be the only ones on 72MHz. I lost my soaring plane a week ago because it was on 72MHz and I forgot to pull out the antenna after flying on 2.4. I also requested the hot dog cart vendor for next year. We may have to go to the control line combat field and beat up those Chicago gangsters to get him away from them because they built up their NATS participation over the last two years. The vendor from last year has been removed for health reasons as well as being a no-show too many times. As for the last several years we will fly SSC and Open B the first two days and 2948 Scale and Limited B the second two days. As of now I don't know if 2948 Scale will be an Official or Provisional event next year. The AMA is working on deciding which form it will be on. As in the past there will be two entry forms, one for official events which have an event number assigned to them and one for unofficial events that have not yet had an event number assigned. I will keep you posted. Wish I could have cut some streamer at Blue Ridge today.

I have seen the entry forms for this year and 2948 is on the unofficial event form. It should make the official form for next year and will have a class number like open and ssc. The entry forms should be on the AMA website about mid February. Since 2948 and Limited B are unofficial events, AMA does not provide awards and we need to purchase them. For the past few years the RCCA has purchased very nice awards for all classes in addition to the awards provided by the AMA. This was done to see if it would increase participation. It did not. I would suggest we have the RCCA purchase the same awards from AMA that they provide for the official classes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. We have been going to 5th place. Do you want to keep it to 5th place??? The AMA awards are not very expensive. What are your thoughts?

I think paying for the extra awards is worth it. Continuing to 5th place sounds like a good idea as well.

The extra (duplicate 1st-3rd) awards don't draw people to the NATS. The gas cards for long distant travelers again would be a better way to draw more people. Money better spent.

I think we should continue awards to 5th place.

I like the idea of going with the same awards the AMA provides. They are a very nice plaque.

I don't think we need to provide duplicate 1st-3rd plaques, IF we go with the AMA provider.

If you were at the NATS last year you should have received your entry forms in the mail for this year. There will be $100 gas cards for pilots traveling 500 miles one way to the NATS. Multiple cards for multiples of 500 miles. Shirts will also be for pilots. Both require registration with the AMA by the end of June. Don't rely on the mail after the middle of June. You can register over the phone. There will be a few engines as door prizes as well. Anyone able to get other merchandise donated for the cause would be appreciated. Please post here if you have something.

We have 3 pilots registered as of today. RC soaring has 30. Get you schedule in order and register soon. The number of awards is based on the number of pilots registered by the end of June. RC soaring always has the highest number of rc entries. I think free flight has the largest overall. Somehow free flight doesn't require pilot skill.

ONLY SIX days left to register with the AMA and get a free T shirt and if traveling 500 miles or more, getting a gas card. I suggest with mail delivelivery being slow, you should call the AMA and register over the phone. This year we are supposed to get our tails clipped by an invasion of Texans. Yea, right!

I just booked my room but had to go to a second motel to find one. Something is going on at the university at the time of our event. Better book NOW and cancel later if needed. I camped at the field when I was younger but wouldn't want to do it now.

Gas Cards:

I was looking at how many $100 one way gas cards I need to come up with for the NATS. I used Google maps, the city you live in, the most direct route, and the AMA's actual address. Here is what I got for greater than 500 miles:

Donald Grissom Conyers, GA 586 miles 1 gas card.
Robert Sauer Parkville, MD 555 miles 1 gas card.
David Turner Southmayd, TX 881 miles 1 gas card.
Bob Starr McKinney, TX 905miles 1 gas card.
Gary Funkhouser Riverside, CA 2098 miles 4 gas cards.
Bruce Blevins Howe, TX 880 miles 1 gas card.
Tom Neff Aurora, CO 1139 miles 2 gas cards.

I will need 11 gas cards total.

Please contact me If I left you off the list or I needed to use your actual address to figure the gas card credit.

We also have .25 and .15 Magnum engine door prizes that I will have available at the NATS.
look forward to meeting several of you that I haven't met before. :D

How come there's no smack talk about the Nats? I think it's because us Wisconsin boys have scarred the rest of the guys and they are only coming to Muncie for the culture and weather.
