I fly with Andy P at many venues and at his urging we did the NATs this year, I myself was wanting to show off the potential of electrics, IMO power to weight ratios, and thrust to weight ratios of electrics far exceed anything a liquid fuel piston powerplant, on ANY application. I was totally blown away on how it came out. The peace of mind just standing at the line, starting my own TX timer at 90seconds to combat, watching my own countdown timer on TX and just release at 20 second to start combat fits my style of hyperness

Some tech stuff, plane came out under 2.5lbs with packs capable of single round so I geared up for some heavy 30C packs which were two rounds per charge, ended up flying at 2 3/4lbs
So packs were put in wing each side of center 1/2'' behind leading edge across leading edge.
I knew WOT dirt naps and strings would be enemy of electrics so I have my own design motor X mount 1/4" thick that houses a 10mmX4mm bearing in rear. The Hyperion outrunner is short and with 4mm shaft rearward, supported in bearing of X mount it has ZERO flex, you must use the aluminum prop shaft adapter for bell side to mount prop. PLUS I used 1 1/4" dubro plastic spinners, they deflect any dirt from entering motor as it streamlines front. it is a sacrificial $2 item and I only broke one in 10 rounds with 2 WOT dirtnaps. I also had strings wound up in motor bell unknowingly as they present no problem mounting motor basically 180deg from the talked about Turnigy/collet prop mount setups.
The best part came the motor performance, this motor setup will turn the prop WOT 20K rpms, the beauty of the ESC I used was it has heli governor mode, so I set it up to 17400 in governor mode , AND flew two complete rounds per charge on packs. The governor mode did all the work to maintain rpms in all attitudes and depleleting pack charge. considering a nitro using pinch method can never even get close to 17400 unless going vertical the performance was noticable differant.
Once recharged the packs were showing aprox 2100-2000mah used.
The motor is rated for 425 watts, I was only around 280 watts and I routinely run my Hyperion Z motors twice there rated capacity in speed setups as they have 200C rated magnets and wire. slapping on a prop to 600watts caused extreme flutter in the e-falcon ailerons...
IMHO this E-power setup is utopia of Open B and SSC with just a prop change,ie
600watts and a single round per charge, 100MPH
300watts two rounds per charge 50MPH

Also if anyone followed the link for the ESC and then saw the 18G FPV pocket video camcorder on the same page I found the same video recorder on ebay for half the price, $26. The unit looks like it does a real good job of recording video. It weighs between 18 and 20 grams and so I think I'll strap it on my "Mini Me".

I think you`ll find, though that 600w and 20k on the 8/3 prop won`t get you anywhere near 100mph. Simple math will tell ya that your pitch speed is only about 60mph at 20k. Of course you only need an honest 80mph to be competitive in Open B, but 600w on a Falcon sized plane won`t get ya to 80mph.
You could fly Open B with an 8/3 at 20k, and score, but you won`t chase anyone down for a cut. You`ll be swiping at streamers as they fly by.
From my experience (see 2007 NPS Open B results, All of my heats were flown on electric power that year) you need at least 900w to be a serious competitor in Open B with e-power.

Thanx guys,
600+watts is with a simple prop change ie 5 or 6 inch pitch, I slapped on a MA 9X5 and it fluttered severly. I would not hesitate to run this motor @ 900watt as it is WOT which prompts great cooling.
With 750 watts as 1 HP I'm wondering if 900W (1.2HP) is a close calculation of what you might achieve on a .25 nitro in HP?

In an Outlaw on 6s 102amps 2100watts all summer long in 90+ temps, my motor mount ends up heatsinking heat out of motor and I find the mount is warmer than motor.FWIW, Scorpions/Turnigy/Axi of sub200 grams could not pull this off in the Outlaw, (We tried) thus why I am so Pro Hyperion, the other key thing IMO is they have the prop shaft adapter which allows me to use my motor mount and I end up with an outrunner as rigid as an inrunner.
I make and sell my mounts there waterjet cut, they are aluminum. 3/8" , 1/4" thick, $10each if mailing $3 shp. They are center punched undrilled for Hyperion, center hole is reamed for the bearing $7ea. Pictured above is the 1/4" one.

Mike, Are you looking for a similar esc. If so, Hobby City has the same esc in stock for $31 just has a different lable on it. Unless you need more than 500 of them, and there are dozens of different esc that will do the same job.

Has anyone tried the Telebe Otter 55 amp esc?
They are $19 at Hobby King, are rated 55 amps and have a heli governor mode.
Also, how do you set up governor mode on an ESC?
Is it set for a specific rpm, or does it just keep it constant at your WOT setting?
It seems to me that being able to simply set the max RPMs could save a lot of time and hassles with readjusting the throttle end point.

Typically to use the egovernor mode you have to have a flight mode that you switch to that will allow the throttle channel values be seen by the ESC as a constant value no matter the actual stick position.
I've always bought heli radios as the flight mode switch is in a better spot even for airplanes, if you actually set up a model as a heli its really easy as you get whats called an idle up flight mode and a seperate throttle mix is already pre programmed.
