Re: GNAT
Used Duck brand carpet tape. Had half a roll for about 8 years after I switched to tangle foot. I am going to order some of the tape William has started using. If the noodle material works, I will use that tape to attach the foam. If the foam doesn't work, I will try the tape to get away from tangle foot.

I have a couple more that I tried uploading, but I keep getting an error.

Re: GNAT
The water noodle experiment was a failure. Back to the drawing board. We found that for Gnats using no sticky substances of any kind works pretty well. A SMALL notch in the tip of flying surfaces near the outer edge does work very well. It might work well on other planes as well.

Re: GNAT
Last Saturday up in Green Bay, we had winds blowing 0-15, gusting to 20 and surprisingly, the GNATs handled the wind ok. They seemed to cut through the wind just fine. Even with no sticky allowed in this class, there were plenty of streamers hanging onto the planes. The allowed notches did a great job to get the cuts and they surprisingly kept a majority of them on the plane. The planes survived throughout the meet, as long as they weren't lawn darted.

Here's my version of the GNAT. The fuse isn't ran through the wing and I didn't use standard servos. I used 3/8 ply stuck to coro with Duck brand "cloth" double sided tape at the tips and at the middle directly under the fuse.

Re: GNAT
Dominator, what are you using for a spar? I don't like the plan recommendation for 5/32 piano wire. i wasplanning to use two pieces of 1/8 f/g rod slathered with some PU glue. or maybe just a wood dowel.... easy to change if it breaks!

Re: GNAT
I used the wire on the ends and fiberglas rod down the wing and it holds up well. Bob and I gave a demonstration with the Gnats and the people loved it. We needed no sticky stuff as we were getting prop cuts and the crowd was going nuts.

I have been using 5/32 fiberglass rods. 2 - 18 inches long. Longer ones tend to be difficult to slide all the way in.
If you don't have 5/32, I would go with a couple of the 1/8 inch. Wood won't hold up very well.

I used the music wire on my 2nd Gnat but used fg rods on the 1st and 3rd. Pu glue worked fine.

Re: GNAT
It looks like my meet Memorial day weekend will be the first official GNAT class meet. We will have SSC and 2948 on Saturday and GNAT and Limited B on Sunday. Six rounds for each class. When talking to some of the older pilots in the RCCA (earlier fliers not age) many meets were 4 to 6 rounds. New pilots came to fly with one plane and maybe a second. They felt like they could compete in that meet but were discouraged in meets with 8 or 10 rounds. The East Coast meets have had new pilots coming to fly 6 rounds of SSC and 4 rounds of scale. Learning from that, I thought 6 rounds of each class might be better than 8 rounds each of three classes or 10 rounds each of 2 classes. New pilots will be a lot less likely to run out of planes and get discouraged.
