MIG 3 - Getting My Feet Wet In Scale

Post by midair02 »

Here is my venture into scale. Hopefully, I will test fly it later on Monday. Still have to make a cowl, but I want to see if it flies first, before I take the time to make a mold for a pop bottle cowl.

First launch was a belly flop. Ok... more up elevator - check. Run and throw??? Yup!!! It flies!!!!! :D I now know how far back you can go with the CG. She tends to nose up when I chop the throttle and wants to go tail first on a deadstick landing. Gotta remember to keep the nose down on landings. It does have a decent roll rate. Only snaps when I pull straight back. Stick to the corner does a nice tight barrel-ish roll. I don't know how fast it is compared to anything else. She sure looks nice up in the air, though. 8)

William,
Did you cut out everything for it yourself, or was it a kit? I'm guessing there will be no test flights today if it's as windy in northern WI as it is in southern WI...

I did cut it out myself a couple years ago. I just finally got around to finishing it up. Here is the before shot:

Shaping the foam wasn't that bad. I used one of those cheap, plastic, retractable utility knives to carve out most of the foam. Then I used a palm sander with 100 grit sand paper. You have to keep it moving or it melts the foam.

The fuse ended up being really heavy. I have some ideas on what I would do next time around to keep it light. Like no plywood crutch. I am thinking of using pop bottles to make up the fuse with an aluminum fuse on the inside like my open style planes. There would be a foam saddle for the wing with some extra foam to the rear of the wing for something to "grab" onto for launching.

Definately no test flying going on anytime soon. Oh, wait. I did test flew my trailer today!!! Got four wheels up in the air before aborting the "test flight".
