ME-410 Hornet Build

Post by Dane McGee »

Next project is the ME-410 Hornet.

Image

I have to admit that I am quite taken by twins. They require the extra mile, but the end product is well worth it. Making minimum weight of 4 # is a challenge but even at almost
5 # these birds fly great. I just completed the British version of the Hornet and now the Luftwaffe's turn. :D

I used the metal template method employing a printed scale drawing glued to a shaped aluminum template pattern. I then used my hotwire "scroll saw" table to cut the fuse and nacelles by following the edges of the aluminum template.

Image

I used a carbon fiber arrow shaft for strength in the fuse, hotwired some ligthening holes and glued together with gorilla glue......very strong and very light.

Image

The nacelles are foam with arrow shaft and HDPE engine mount.....ready to glue.

......and fuse and wing completed and ready for tape and covering.

The wing will be held to the fuse by traditional rubberband method attatched to dowels/CF rod in the fuse (not yet installed) however the engine nacelles will be permanently glued to the wing.
I usually wait till covering is applied before I install the hold down rods to make application of the vinyl easier.

Looking good Dane. I like the way you did the motor mount, strong and solid. Where are you getting your sign vinyl?

Yeah baby. The twins fly great and with a good fuel system they are as reliable as a single engine plane. The glue is drying on the 2nd p-38 while I'm at work today. It may or may not make the next meet. It's hot outside and I dont have a/c in my shop. Been getting up early and workin on it in the
Mornings before work.
Lookin good Dane. Keep us posted.

My twin Gekko wont be ready for the 7th but it will be ready for Kansas. Three twins in the air for combat will be awesome. I'm working on another Spit that I hope to have ready by the 7th.

I am picking up my P-61 wings tomorrow from Bruce. I have most of my templates done, so I will have 3 twins going to Kansas. If the P-38 makes it through next weekend.
I am thinking about painting the foam first and cover with clear tape. Anyone have any suggestions on this idea?

Bob, I don"t think the P-61 were issued with pink color schemes..........Cort had a few planes that had the foam painted. I have the tail feathers for the P-39 if you want them, also have two P-39 wings in repairable shape.

David you know the bottom of the scale ships I build will be the greatest color for combat there isPink.
Thanks for the offer of the p-39 parts, but I am going with the big wing Bear Cat next.
I found some paint that is safe on foam, so my build time will be cut down, because I hate zagi tape.
