2007 participation and 2008 plans?
Well, time to have people shout out what they plan to fly for a great 2008.
Towards the end of 2007 several individuals were talking about how Open B was dead and SSC was the only thing going or growing. Of course, those folks are bad a basic math. While SSC finished about even with Open B for NPS pilots, 27% of those pilots flew less than 10 rounds. Open B seems to have a stable participation level at about 1/2 of its peak, and Lim B has a stable base of around 32 pilots. Amazingly, 2548 seems to have come back from near demise!
So here are the RCCA participant figures for the past few years.
Class - 05 - 06 - 07
Open B 93 - 63 - 67
Lim B 17 - 32 - 31
SSC 113 - 88 - 70
2610 18 - 15 - 18
2548 30 - 14 - 22
I'm a bit amazed that rather than leveling off like Open B, SSC is still in a nose dive. Hope that levels off or rebounds soon. Maybe that will happen if it ever gets out of provisional status. But the 2610 Scale class is almost gone. Not sure why, but 2548 seems to be making a bit of a comeback!!! And while 3696 has gained popularity, it didn't make it as a rule book or even provisional class yet.
So what are you planning to fly for 08?

Mostly scale for me. I like SSC, but with the hours I work, plus a 2 year old daughter, I find my time a little limited, and I want to build sport planes, too, so something has to go. I still have 2 SSC birds in good repair, and I'll probably fly a few rounds this year, but I would rather promote scale combat, as that is what appeals to me the most.
Last sortie for me was ssc on 11-08-03 at Jetero field. I have been in the same mode as Rabbit Leader the past few years. The eldest son has graduated and the other likes fishing and girls more than flying (where did I go wrong.) This year I'm gearing up for the Nats. Open B and SSC for me, open B and ssc for eldest son and limited b and ssc for my father. I have three 8 year old JBD 2610 planes-1 Ta 152 and 2 Bearcats that have never seen action. They probably wont be competitive at the Nats, they will be fun. The nearest contests for me will be in the D/FW area. After the Nats, SSC and I'll build a couple of 2548 planes because that's on the contest calendar up there.
As in previous years, I plan to fly anything that I can get to. I have SSC,Open B,Limited B,2610,2548,3696,1/2A,Zagi type wing,Slow Sticks, and Tufflight's Singray ready to chase streamers. I now have a Dave Patrick's Ultimate Bipe nearly repaired after I dorked it 4 years ago. I don't plan to chase streamers with that one. I also have a CP+ chopper I plan to fly Sunday in a HS Gym. Assuming a successful electric chopper experience, I have an OS 32 powered shuttle chopper to fly outside this spring between combat meets. After I get the Bipe repaied, I may have some time to paint the basement or cut more B wings.

Quickdraw, don't give up on that 2610 plane. If you enter the nats with it, you might finish in the money just for entering.
Sadly 2610 is fading away, and that is my absolute favorite class to fly. Oh well.
I will piece together some 3696 planes and primarily fly Open B. For the Sanctioned events out here, or when I fly out of state, I'll also fly some SSC. Also will fly slope/glider combat.
