Forum Access

Post by THend »

Hey folks, there is a guy trying to post here on the forum, and he states that he applied but didn't get the email back.

He is trying to set up a web based business selling RC stuff for combat. I have nothing to do with this person or his business. I'm just trying to get combat information to the major combat forum..the RCCA.

Here is his quote from RC Groups:

Terry,

I monitor the registration requests for access to the forum. Back when I was webmaster and "chief bottle washer" anyone could register and get on the forum without any review process but I was noticing problems with the forum and when I checked the membership list for the forum there were literally a couple thousand registrations that showed up that had never posted and were slowing down the forum. So a couple of years ago I turned on the approval function before someone could get on the forum to stop the flood of spammers trying to get on the forum. Every month the numbers seem to get higher and higher. They apparently are using automatic scripts because I get between 25 and 40 registration requests per day that I have to go through. I look for the obvious porn and viagra spammers first and then the ones that have ridiculously long and random nicknames or email addresses and then I check the ip address country of origin for countries like Russia, middle east and asia pacific where the most blatant spammers originate. In the process I'm sure that someone with an oddball email provider or someone that generates some meaningless forum name might get rejected. So if this guy is legit shot me an email with his contact info and I'll contact him and make sure that he gets access to the forum.

I pride myself on this forum being a family friendly spam free environment(except the ones with limited vocabularies and use the "T" word) but sometimes a legit person might get filtered out with the spammers.

This is an example of just what has come in in the last 8 hours

I used to send emails to each of the questionable ones to get a confirmation that they were legit but no one ever replied and so I started to develop a list of the bogus email domains and found a service to check the origin of the IP addresses to wade through all these. Some are very blatant with their porn and drug related forum name requests and email addresses. These today are just good examples of the random text generated email addresses and forum names that are generated.

Roy, thanks for doing what you do. Most of us have no idea of what it takes, including me.

Wow...

Such a wonderful tool this internet...yet such a dangerous place too.

Thanks Roy for helping me with the membership to the forum. I know I normally check it and it may have 5 or 6 people that have signed up and all of them are spam. I have received a email from the person that is wanting access and have sent a email back to him letting him know about our restrictions to access.
