Club combat SPAD construction Falcon

Post by Lee Liddle »

Hi Guys. Here is a slick little combat plane that is quick to build and flys great. It has darn good performance on a 3s 2200 and Open B style performance on 4s. At least it feels that way. Just some pics for now, but I`ll follow with some video and plans/construction pics.

This little beast also has a couple of big brothers to cover too.

Thanks Dane. This was a little experiment. trying to come up with an instant (1hr build time) combat plane that your average e-flyer wouldn't mind flying in combat. I was also looking for something that would work with the basic 3696 motor/esc combo, even if a diff battery and prop were needed for good performance.

So far so good. I just picked up some fresh coro, so I'm going to build a few and cut a few kits. Bring them to LSN and maybe a club meeting or two.

Something like this would be so much better than the 2s blue foam combat that many are flying. Mainly because they would be more durable and could be flown in a lot more wind. With those 2s birds, anything over 10mph wind and you are combating the wind, not each other.

I have a little video that I'll post on you tune late tonight. It's not very good, but I'll see if I can get better vid in the AM.

Here is a link to my thread on RCG. The RGC forums are much more user friendly, so I`m going to continue the thread there.
Posting pics is easier and you can embed video in the thread.

I`m going to post some simple plans and some build pics and tips in case anyone else wants to build one. This one flew pretty nicely on a 3s 2200 with the 1100kv motor and a 9/8.5 e prop, but I broke the prop. With a 9/6 it needs 4s to get the watts up to about 280w. The 3536-1400 would probably work great with the 9/6 on 3s.

Check in to this thread for build details

Looking really good and now I can confirm that familiar looking flying wing that I saw behind the apartment complex was you! I've seen you twice putting it though it's paces when Jan and I were having an ice cream cone at Baums. Really looking forward to more details on this one. Really didn't want to have to fire up the CNC machine after all this years to cut some more wings!

Yeah, those are my new digs Roy. I love it! Just step out the back door and fly. Can`t beat it. Sure makes getting everything test flown easy. I don`t use a "real" SSC power system because of the noise it makes, but I can match speed and weight with a quiet rpm/prop, then use the 8/3 when I get away from the houses.

I`m working on a 64" Coro-Falcon right now that looks like it will be pretty close to min weight for SSC. I`ve already flown a 60" with Open B power that weighs in at about 63oz, just under the max weight. $20 motor, $20 esc with a switching bec and about $50 in lipos. My first Open B system cost me about $350 back in `06

These things fly great. I know they won`t take much punishment, but with some mass production I could seriously put one together RTF in about 90 min. The price of Coro has doubled, so the material cost for one is about $5 incl glue and wood. Also one benifit of flying these is that I won`t be flying any old beat up tanks. One good hit and they`ll go in the trash. Then, pull out a new one.

When I get some free time, invite me over and we`ll build you one in your garage if the weather`s not too cold.

Lee, sounds great, i really appreciate the offer. Now I've got the needed incentive to get the garage cleaned out early. I'll buy at least two complete kits from you for your help! I assume that the email address you've got in your profile here is current. I'll be in touch.

I`ve got the 64" SSC bird flying nicely. Right now the weight on the first one is 45oz. I`ll look to trim a little bit more weight off, but that`s not bad for a SPAD. I`ll try to get some video with a real SSC power system on it this weekend. Also Open B video.

I`ve finished up what I would concider a mass production prototype of an SSC version today. It`s been raining all day, so I haven`t flown it. The RTF weight came in at 42.7oz, with a 5s 2200 lipo. It would be about 45oz with a 6s 2200. I`m happy with that weight. It has a real 17,500 SSC system on it, so I`m looking forward to test flights tomorrow.

From kit form, the airframe took just less than an hour (real start to finish time) to complete. With everything sitting on the bench and CG issues worked out, installing the radio gear and powersystem could be done in 30 min. With a little practice the airframe complete with radio could litterly be built in an hour, ready to bolt on a fuselage.

On this one I`ve used a 1"x1" aluminum angle chanel about 11" long for the fuselage, with a 1.5" x 1.5" x .5" pine block capped with a 1/8" firewall to mount the motor and standard X mount to. Not quite as clean as my homemade aluminum L mount, but it`s quick, easy and will adapt to the stock mount that comes with most motor this size. I`ve mounted a 3s lipo in the fuselage behind the motor. This helps hit the needed CG with out the nose being super long. Shorter is lighter.

I`ll post some pics on the RCG thread later tonight. Flight vid tomorrow if the weatherman is right.
