Set Back Distances

Post by Ed Kettler »

I just completed a review of the Open rules regarding electrics, and want to bring up an area of potential ambiguity.

If you use 1/2A weights (up to 2 pounds for electrics) then the rule in Section 2.1 Safety about 500 feet for each cubic inch of displacement yields ~30 feet between the CEL and the spectators. Section 4.1.3, however, states that the Safety Line is no less than 25 feet behind the CEL, and 4.1.4 states that the Pilot Line is no less than 15 feet behind the Safety Line, giving a total of 40 feet between the CEL and the Pilot Line.

So, the short story answer is that the minimum set back between the CEL and the Pilot Line is 40', and the spectators have to be behind the pilots.
