Peformance of Norvel on APC 10X3

Post by Lou Melancon »

This week I set up one Norvel .25 BB AME to bench run and test plugs and fuels for the new 2548 scale class. I had been disappointed in the performance of my Norvels with the APC 10X3 but they are old, dirty and tired so I needed one set up correctly for testing.

Running PowerMaster 15% fuel, OS A3 plug, 8 ounce DuBro clunk tank, on a cool and dry 60 degree afternoon here are the readings I got:

MA 9 X 4 - 16,800 - 17,100

APC 10X3 - 14,880 15,00

with spinner on APC 10X3 the results were same as without

This tells me that the max rpm limit is attainable without too much effort. The Norvel spraybar will not handle the pressure of a bladder so I am going to change it to an OS spraybar then use an OS LA .15 needle valve mounted remotely to control bladder fuel flow.

On this engine the stinger was drilled out to relieve back pressure but the stinger was left in place. There was no baffle in the engine.

Another series of checks will be done without the head gasket to see if increasing compression will increase rpms.
