Wing covering ???

Post by shepard62 »

What is the most common technique for covering the wing? I am a beginner at building a combat plane so help from the group is welcome. How much tape (what kind ) and where does it go ? What goes over that? Typical dumb question stuff.

I use bi-directional fiberglass strapping tape over the LE, Spars, and TE. I then cover the entire wing with colored packing tape. A light dusting on the foam of Duco spray will help all tape stick much better. I then use a regular clothes iron set to "silk" to iron out the covering. I buy my colored packing tape at fast-pack.com The resulting covering is extremely light and fuel prof.

Some of us are now using this:

Very easy to apply.

Thanks Bob and Dane,

What is "Duco spray" ? ( Paint or adhesive?)

I will begin experimenting now (picture the mad scientist here). The fire department will be advised and standing by.

Anyone doing something different?

I only put a strip of bidirectional tape (like packing tape but with the fibers running in both directions) across the leading edge, and over both spars on top and bottom. The wings I cut have a 3/8" square balsa trailing edge, so I don't put bidi tape on the TE. I do put some bidi tape around the center as well where the rubber bands hold it on. As far as covering goes, I give the core a light mist with 3M super 77 spray (available at Menards). I use the colored packing tape to cover...uline or fastpack tape like Bob mentioned. If you don't want to be fancy, even clear packing tape works...but who wants a pink wing?!? Then you can use a heat gun to shrink the covering, but be careful not to blow the covering with too much heat! Remember that the bidi tape adds a lot of weight, so only use it where you need it!
Hope that helps,

It is a spray adhesive I get at Menards for less than $5. They sometimes carry a Power Poxy spray that works well and is under $5.
