Walmart cutting boards

Post by lightning »

Hi all,
I'm in the process of building some more flat bats for the first time in about 4 years (they have survived that well!) . My current fleet has made use of 1/2" HDPE from Walmart cutting boards as a very tough firewall.
I only had enough material left to make one, so I headed to Walmart yesterday to find that the 1/2" cutting boards are no longer available, replaced with a 1/4" version. NOT thick enough to drive screws into the edge through the bat material.
Anyone got an angle on a suitable replacement? Even 3/8" would do.
Reluctant to use plywood or MDF as it just does not resist splitting like the HDPE does.
Thanks.

You could try to find a local plastic supplier. Midland plastics is here in Wisconsin. I would go this way if you want a lot.

Otherwise http://www.mcmaster.com has what you're looking for. The price is in line with what I paid for at Midland several years ago. I'd go with UHMW (Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) rather than HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene). A 1/2" x 12" x 12" (item 8752K115) sheet goes for $14.28. The only downside to their site, is that they don't give you a shipping price up front. With that being said, my last order of 12"x12" G10 shipped for only $6.75 and it wasn't light. While you're there, stock up on whatever nuts and bolts you need.

Thanks William - looks like McMaster-Carr will do it.
Tried my local supplier (Laird Plastics). They only deal in 8'x4' sheets!!!!
Bit more than I need!

You should also try a restaurant supply store. They carry nice size commercial cutting boards in the ½” thick variety. You can find several online if you don't have a local one with good prices.

I found polyproplyene boards at Harbor Freight. Ben Morrow used that stuff on his Pirahna because it would bend instead of breaking.

I use motor mounts from Aerowright in my phenceposts and I haven't broke one...having said that now I'm sure to break one in October at William's meet in Green Bay  They're really nice and come predrilled for SSC for an OS and have holes drilled through them to set up a remote needle valve. They cut some for me for 25's as well for when I get the time to start building a fleet for limited B.
