Let me know if this is a wacky idea.
I'm finishing a KI-43 Oscar. Green on top, white on bottom.
I did some tests on spare foam. As I've seen before, overlapping green tape, the green is light and then there are dark stripes on the overlap.
If I paint the foam or the bi-di tape first, then apply the colored tape, the color is more consistant and darker. It shows small bubbles but that does not look as bad as the overlapping stripes.
I think the tape is holding fine to the paint (plastic Krylon), just wondering what's gonna happen when fuel gets on it long term.
I will however make 1 nitro and 1 electric (with ability to convert to nitro if needed), so not worried about that as much on the electric if it stays that way.

Re: Painting under the tape
I have painted foam with latex interior paint before which looked good. I think you could cover that with clear packing tape to make it fuel proof. Sure would cut down on the number of different colored rolls of tape needed and the overlap wouldn't have a different color density. I guess I have a new Winter test project.

Re: Painting under the tape
It seemed to turn out not so bad. Keep in mind, I"m not using clear tape though. I'm just trying to get the color consistant and darker than the puke green packing tape. See pics:
