Slow to load

Post by EK »

The past couple weeks my computer has been slow to load the forum and like pulling teeth to go to the next page or go back. The rest of the site hasn't been that bad. Another frustrating occurance is having to double or triple click the back arrow before any response happens (This is on just about every web page visited). A little advice from a computer help site said to place the mouse over the arrow and see what's holding up the show. In my case it was google ads almost every time.

Tonight I changed the default search engine (internet explorer) to yahoo and it's operating like a new machine.

Anyone else seeing this?

Hi Evan: One of the things that happens to Windows computers as they get older, is that the "registry" gets filled up with junk. If you are not using a registry cleaner such as "Registry Mechanic" by PC Tools, I recommend it. Another thing is that too many programs end up getting loaded into memory at start up. The old DOS command was C:\msconfig but I think that there is a Windows version of it. It will allow you to avoid loading all the junk that doesn't really need to be loaded. Also defrag your hard drive if you haven't done so in awhile. I hope this helps a bit.

Evan,
I use a free utility called "Crap Cleaner" (CCleaner) to wipe out temp files and clean up my registry. It also provides a utility to select what starts when you boot up your computer.
Been working for me for 3 or 4 years now.
You can find it at http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

Might just be worth a try.

I use Malware, Spybot, and AML Reg Cleaner. I left the default search engine on Yahoo yesterday and have had no problems today (so far at least).

One of the problems that I had in the past was that the anti-virus software started taking up so many CPU cycles that it more or less became the malware itself! One of the things that you can do to see WHAT is slowing down your computer is to use the task manager. Hold down CTRL+ALT+Delete at the same time to call up the "interupt" page. Click on "Start Task Manager". When the task manager window comes up, click on the "Processes" tab. Look in the CPU column and see if there is any particular process that is hogging all the resources. If there is something there that doesn't look right, you can stop that particular process and see if the situation improves.

This is one of my favorite sites to get freeware for computer issues. It also has a ton of articles to help you figure some common problems out.
