Electric Scale

Post by mlapacz »

This is my first try at an electric combat plane, BF 109.
I used the specs that the guys in Europe use.
It came out a little heavy at 1# 7 oz. Too much bidi I guess.
Turnigy 2830 1020 kv motor
Turnigy 25 Amp ESC
1000 mah battery to meet the RCCA requirement
APC 8x6 prop
I'm waiting for the snow to melt to do the maiden.

Mike,
That looks great! I just finished making a little zagi that I found the build video for on you tube:
http://youtu.be/wgJaRct-0CY
It flies great but I still have to iron out the launch. I have not tried it with the streamer attached yet and I'm not sure if it will cut a streamer or not with the delta wing. The foam board I made it out of from the dollar store was cheap...guess how much the foam board cost?

Nice looking zagi Andy.
What are the specs on the electronics?

I got a watt meter and found that my motor is pulling 10.8 Amps at full throttle.
That comes out to a theoretical flight time of 5.5 minutes at full throttle, and that doesn't take into account the receiver and servo drain.
I'll have to see how it flys at lower throttle settings to get more flight time.
I'm hoping to get the first flight in next weekend.

Mike,
I deviated from the build video a little for the zagi and put on a power up 370 zoom 2600 kv brushless motor from heads up rc with a 4.5x4.5 prop and a turnigy plush 25a speed controller and an orange r615x receiver. I felt funny posting a picture of a zagi in the scale forum after your beautiful plane, but it's what will be chasing (or running from) you this summer if it can tug a streamer. I may experiment with different props but that's kinda like trying to figure out black magic voodoo for me and I usually stick with the first thing I try when it comes to props anyways.

I made one of the fast & furious combat planes that are talked about on the rc groups forum last season but was disappointed with how it handles the wind which is why I built the zagi
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1061750

Now I'm working on a mini gremlin to try because I got sick of repairing/making wings all off season. I'll post more on the mini gremlin after I get it built and tested

It should be interesting to see which design(s) are settled upon in this electric class...let me know how yours maidens for you.

Think spring!

Well, after 2 broken props, my first attempt at scale electric didn't go so well.
I don't think I had enough RPMs to get the plane airborn.
Suggestions were a bigger prop, 9x6, or a 4 cell battery.
I'll try a bigger prop first.

Mike,
Did you see the set-up that this person used on their electric plane from RC Groups? It looks to be similar to yours. Otherwise maybe Lee Liddle would have a suggestion.

I'm glad to hear that your "slimmer" scale planes flew well at least!

I can't wait to test out all the planes I repaired from last season...

Hey Andy,
That's where I got the specs for the power system on my plane.
Those guys build very light, which could be the difference.
I'll try the 9x6 prop.
I bench ran twelve Magnum 15s on Saturday to use on my SSC and Gnats.
Sunday I flew the maiden flights on the three 2548 planes and three Limited B.
I'm getting stoked to start the combat season.
