Mag 15 XLS HS Needle

Post by sgilkey »

Finally got some flights on my first and only Mag 15XLS. Very nice running engine. The HS needle is not as hyper-sensitive as the old Mag XL, but it still leaks fuel. Biggest problem I had was that the HS needle backs out during flight, due to vibration. I tried bending the ratchet spring to increase the preload, but the needle is still creeping, and the extra spring load will only make the fuel leakage problem worse. I could remove the HS needle and plug it and use an RNV, but wondered if anyone else had run into this issue and if so, how did they fix it? After the flying session I put a piece of fuel tubing over the NV housing to try to "seal" it, maybe that will help, but did not get a chance to flight test. Other than this, it's a nice engine.

Scott, I s-canned the stock needle valves on my mags immediately, plugged the hole and use a remote needle valve zip tied to the engine mount from a la 15.

Rock solid runs on a bladder.

Scott,
We had a few start too leak, and like you put on some 5/32 fuel tubing over it. Seemed too help some until you push on the end of the needle. You can hear the change.
I broke one down last week and did notice the Oring on the needle itself could be a hair bigger too help seal.
I order some OEM too see what the replacement size should be.
I may try a Perry remote once the carb needle gets damaged.
I use them on my B's and they work well I have 1 that is 2 years old.
And yes multiple midairs never damaged the remote.
Hope this helps.

Scott,
I was comparing parts today and noticed, you could try a OS 25FX needle valve.
The tip has a different taper, but I was thinking more about the seal itself.
I have a few things too test fly this weekend and may try it.

Scott,
One of my test flights was with the Mag high speed needle with a NEW oring in the original seat and slid the old one past the threads till it stops.

IT worked today... no leaks you have too turn it out about 2 1/2 turns and tune from there....
Tached 17,100 on 15% Cool power pinhed too 17,500 K thats on a Hayes tank.
Hope that helps
