I'm trying out a different covering, good results
Moderator: hbartel
Most of the Intermediate vinyl and laminates for the sign industry are pvc base, its basically the same thing the only difference is that laminate is clear (of course)(and price), this one in particular can be printed with eco-solvent inks, it absorbs inks there for there is no need to sand it/scruff it, I used this type for laminating small full color decals/labels, I have read about other laminates Like the "New Stuff" that Terry mentioned that paint doesn't stick good to it, also it is thicker. If I were to make a scale combat plane I would definitely be covering with this and then paint over it.
BTW the wing gained 11 grams painted top/bottom.

Guys, I am excited about this stuff, I think it will be the cats meow I applied a large test piece on some scrap foam and it seemed to work great! This stuff is tough.
I can see how it could cut covering time waaaaay down compared to tape or film once you get a template and get your pieces cut and laid out.
I ordered a roll and will be covering my new wings and will report on how it works. I was checking the selection and they have almost every color that we could need.......even olive drab and silver for warbirds.

Let us know how the colored material works out, Dane. My mouse is poised over the "Order Now" button on their website. It looks good!

I might build a Mustange if it is easy and tough silver.

Re: I'm trying out a different covering, good results
I covered one wing with it and went on great. Dusted the core with 3M-77 it adhered really, really well, shrinks into the pores of the foam with a heat gun and then rubbing with a thick cloth. If you try to pull off the laminate after shrinking, it will pull parent material away from the wing .
The wing seems very rigid and should require less bidi than a taped wing because of the overall structural strength of the covering. Added 3.7oz to the wing.
I think I'm gonna like this stuff! It will be the bomb for warbrds for sure

Anyone in the DFW area want to split a roll of light grey or silver for 2548's with me?

Hi Dane, that stuff sure looks good.
Just got a few questions:
Just got a few questions:
- Are you using a full length top and bottom, or half length joining in the middle?
- I figuring five 64" wings out of a 30' roll. Am I close?
- How much was their shipping for the roll you got?

Keith, I initially cut a full length piece but found that it was too hard to get it positioned correctly, so I cut it and joined in the middle. With some practice, I think I could do it all in one piece next time.lightning wrote:Hi Dane, that stuff sure looks good.

Depends upon the width of the roll. I got the 15" x 30' roll just to try, but next time I will order 24"x 30' and split in half which will cover most wings, so yes 5 wings should be about right with a little left over I think.
They did not give me a choice of shipping on the web order.. Shipping by UPS was $11.00.....and I hate UPS rates!
Next time I will call it in and specify USPS, which should be cheaper.

Re: I'm trying out a different covering, good results
So, at $28 a roll plus $11 shipping (if it doesn't get cheaper with USPS), we are looking at close to $8/wing for covering??
That's actually quite a lot more than tape.
Will this stuff patch OK after repairs?

Looks good Dane, dude! that yellow is purty bright
It patches good after repairs, I'll post some pictures tonight of a wing I repaired this week, (we had a one on one practice round last sunday and mid-aired after about a minute or so , I t-boned Bruce's wing, breaking both fg spars on his plane, I just hade to glue back a piece of the LE on mine, you can't really tell I patched it.)lightning wrote: Will this stuff patch OK after repairs?

Nope. Its not the cheapest.lightning wrote:................. at close to $8/wing for covering??

This stuff will stick to itself just fine so repairs should be a snap. Tape sticks to it well too.lightning wrote: Will this stuff patch OK after repairs?
