Anybody competing in Open class with electrics?

Post by Monhty »

Hi,

Been lurking around for a while and after some problems finally managed to register

Regarding the number and age of posts in this forum seems electric is not widely spread in Open class

So far I guess I need something around 800 W to be up with the .25 IC guys

any suggestions?

https://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/sto ... oduct=7392

According to Motocalc, with 6S and 9x5 APC could be a nice starting point with 42 amps draw

Thanks in advance

Wow !!

from posts I read, I realised he really dominated the subject, but now I can see he's really The Jedi Master of Electrics !!!

Im using a similar setup to what Liddle uses in SSC but that puts me around .15 performance. Keeping my plane light I get good performance but still keeps me a step down the IC guys

so im researching to beef up to .25 performance

I read the latter post but seems to be around 2007-2008 so I thought electric technology would have progressed this last year

A class with similar requirements is 2548, and here is another thread where Lee makes some recommendations for a .25 sized motor. Now, that class is "limited" to spec props and RPMs, and not wide open like Open B.

We've had some "discussions" and recommendations, but nobody, to my knowledge, has "broken the code" on how to fairly compare displacements to electric motors. The real limiting factor to electric power in Open B is the weight: 3.5 pounds.

Lee has been the "electric evangalist" for many years, as well as a national champion in many classes and one of the "tenners": 10-cuts in a round. When Lee talks, people listen.

Lee's open system worked good enough to get the NPS trophy a year ago.

I saw the first test flight of an Open B Electric Palomar style Mig at the field this past weekend. It really did well. Can't wait to see it at our April Event.

Cool Todd!! I know that the guy who built it isn`t active on these forums, but I`d love to know what hes running and how it`s set up. If you could get him to join us in sharing the e-combat love, that would be awesome.

Bob "Buttercup" Leone and I are getting some new B stuff ready for the LSN this weekend. When I see how stuff shakes out there will be a fresh thread started about N Texas E-Open B 2010 style.

He did look at your the set up and commented on it. His motor was larger but lower KV. I am sure he will figure it out. I have seen him blow up Lipo batteries in mid flight drawing too many amps. I think he will push it until he gets what he wants. Will let you know how he does.
