Sussex Streamer Cuts, DE

Post by montague »

The opening contest of the Mid-Atlantic region is in the books. 14 pilots showed up, and 6 rounds of SSC were flown. We had 4 new pilots flying in their first contest.

This was the best one yet! We had a blast with Kirk taking First place, Jason Second, David S. Third
and Jeffrey Fourth. The winds were high and combat furious. Spectators were as loud as the engines
with their oohs and aahs. A good time was had by all.

Nice pics.

The last pic with the vapor trail trailing behind Kirks bird is too cool.

......without the horizontal, I bet she's a little pitch sensitive huh?

Actually, that plane was oddly flyable with no horizontal. I still had ailerons and throttle, and the plane was stable enough that I actually more "landed" than "crashed" in the bushes after rolling upside down to drop altitude faster, then picking a soft, safe spot to go into the bushes.

I was able to use the throttle to control pitch quite a bit, kind of like flying one of those cheap 2-channel park fliers.

No harm to the plane other than the missing stab and a harmless prop cut in the wing, I could have fixed it on the field but didn't bother.

And this is actually the 3rd time I've lost the horizontal from one of these planes (well, second for just the horizontal, once on an older version I lost the whole back of the fuse at the LE of the horizontal, taking the entire vertical and horzontal together). And in each case, the plane was actually not that hard to control to safely and softly get down.

Now, if I loose an aileron along with the horizontal, or loose just the elevator pushrod but not the whole horizontal, the results are much more typical, a straight-down lawndart. Something about not having the horizontal there allows the throttle and aileron reflex to give some control over the plane, which is nice. It's still coming down, but it's a good feeling to be able to pick the spot of the crash more or less.

I forgot to mention, that vapor trail is pretty cool, but obviously just a jet contrail that happened to get into the picture. Couldn't have staged it better if we'd tried though
