I've seen guys use flat balsa stock, balsa ailerons, balsa trailing edge stock....
I'm looking for effective, cheap alternative, or cheap source...
And I need a bunch of it.
Ailerons, what are you using?

3/8" x 2" trailing edge stock. Nicely rounded so hinges are easy!
Maybe not the cheapest though

For my B ships I use 1/4 inch x 2 inch flat stock. I buy 4 inch wide and then rip it on the saw. I have used yardsticks from Lowe's at one time in the past. At that time they were 50 cents each. As an added bonus, you could measure streamers with them. For my SSC planes I use 3/16 aileron stock to reduce weight but have used the 1/4 inch flat stuff earlier just like the yard sticks. For my Scale ships I use various stuff including trailing edge stock.

Re: Ailerons, what are you using?
Most of my scale bird have trailing edge stock 1"x 1/4" with 1/4" tri-stock glued to form a bevel edge for top hinging. Sometimes I get 1.25" if it will look better. I use this on most of my planes, but the new Falcon and Cobra SSC birds come with pre-cut flat stock, so I used that.

Re: Ailerons, what are you using?
I am all for using the cheapest flat stock out there IF drag and flutter don't become an issue. I used to have no issue buying a big box of balsa trailing edge stock, but it is not cheap!
Besides, I have noticed that I smoke more planes lately, when I do fly combat that is.... So, if the penalty is next to nothing for using flat stock and I/we save money, I say go for it! The two Falcons I had used flat stock, and I didn't notice any issue at all....
Just looking for a way to bring the overall cost of a combat machine down..... they are ALL disposable! Fast, easy, cheap.... just like the gals I used to date..!!
