2011 NATS

Post by boiler »

I will be spending this Saturday in Muncie. The NATS planning meeting is going on. From what I heard at the NATS this year, we will start a day later than what I was told at the end of the planning meeting last year. A World championship has moved into Muncie in the middle of the NATS next season. I will give you an update after the meeting is over.

It is now official. The dates for rc combat at the NATS are July 6,7,8 and 9 in 2011.
We were asked to go to strictly 2.4 and I said we wouldn't be able to do that for next year.
Soaring also delayed going to 2.4 for next year. About 3 more events will be strictly 2.4 for next year and several already were this year. I think we will be able to hang on to 72 for the year after next as well. I have my SSC planes converted to 2.4 but everything else is still 72.
At present I think our membership is only about 10% 2.4 and those that aren't, don't plan on changing over all at once.
Same classes on the same days as the last 2 years. SSC and Open B the first 2 days. 2948 and Limited B the second 2 days.

Bob, pls keep fighting to keep 72MHz legal for NATS use in combat. I can't think of any other event where there are so many Rx required as r/c combat- it's very easy to change over your "fleet" of Scale or Aerobatics or Pylon planes to 2.4, but flying four classes of combat planes, most normal combat pilots will have several (dozens??) of Rx and the cost to convert to 2.4 is pretty daunting. Especially when there is NO demonstrated need in terms of safety or performance. In fact we continue to hear of issues with 2.4 (admittedly there are issues of 72Mhz interference etc as well) so it is by no means foolproof, or a demonstrated safety upgrade to 72- it's more a convenience at this point, and if we are among the few events still using 72 then that makes it even easier to keep allowing us to use it. there is no skin off AMAs nose for us to use it, it's still a legal system.

Bob, I'd like to add my support to Scott's comments. I have over 40 72MHz receivers right now, all but six of them in combat planes. (including some 1/2As)
While I may eventually transition to 2.4GHz, even at $30 a receiver, that will cost me $1200 so it will take a while!
As long as 72MHz is still a legal FCC frequency range, I suggest banning it at Muncie will simply result in even lower participation in the events.
And if we are the only ones using it, I consider we have a very good track record of managing channel conflicts. Especially if ALL channels became available instead of 2/3 of 'em.

I agree guys. I have a ton of receivers as well. I fly 4 events on a regular basis plus the 3696, 1/2 A, and Gnat in recreational or seldom flown combat. I also have several sport nitro and a half dozen sport electrics including choppers. I've started to convert over , but only as fast as I find a need to replace the old receivers. A $30 receiver without crystal and no antenna for target practice seems to be a good replacement. As long as my 72 RX's work, I'll be using them. I don't plan on buying any additional 72 receivers as I go forward. I always carry two TX in case I have a problem. The 2.4 module can be removed and the 72 put back in if I need the other TX for use in 72 and vice versa.

That ruling would certainly be a barrier to entry and probably enough to push out more of the folks who are already on the edge. When you finally lose that battle, we may want to look into moving the Nats event unless that is a sign of things to come at the club level as well.

Won't see me at the NATS if we are required to be 2.4

Like everyone else said I've got lots of 72 receivers and no good reason to switch to 2.4

Just moved this when I realized I didn't know the final dates for the 2011 NATS and went looking for them.
Took me awhile!
I think this is better than buried in the "Upcoming Events" category.
If folks disagree, I'll move it back.

2.4 will keep me away also, I just picked up 5 Hitec super slims with the crystals for 65 bucks. Gotta love 2.4

Are we fixed on the july dates now Bob? I remember some discussion I cant find here about the nats being bumped up a couple weeks to allow for some other event to be held over the 4th. If these are the days lets get them on the contest calendar so we can get planning.

If we could get the dates with which events are flown and when that would help me out. Depending how my summer goes, I hope to make this year's NATS. I'm trying to get some limited B planes built for the upcoming season, and my SSC fleet lies in rubble yet after the last Green Bay meet (God Bless the Packers by the way!!). My associate vet is out on maternity leave from the beginning of April til the end of June. Assuming I have the time and can get off of work...I'll be there!
