I just completed my p47 that I won at the NATS in July. I've included two pictures to show the finished project. I tried something new on this plane to keep the cost down and give a better appearance than colored tape. I found Rustoleum has a latex metalic paint available in quart containers. After thinning with water, I was able to air brush it onto the foam. For this model the top of the wing was primered with spray white pigmented shellac and then painted with the silver latex. The fuse was not primered before applying the silver. The decals are just ink jet prints on plain paper. Everything is then covered with clear packing tape. You can see dings in the foam through the clear tape but you will also be able to see any battle damage through it as well. The tail colors are still colored packing tape. I added some armor and the finish weight is 2 pounds 5 ounces. I started a second p47 using different building techniques for the fuse. I primed the fuse this time and the tail colors are computer matched latex paint. I will be done soon but have home projects that I'm working on now. When I finish, I will post pics for that plane with photos of my experimental construction.

Here are some pics of #2. I'm almost done with a 3rd wing to be used as a spare. All painted surfaces were primed with white pigmented shellac to help get uniform finish coat.


Colors are matched to web pictures using latex paint. Clear packing tape covers the paint.

I may do a camo p-40 plane down the line.

I used solid foam which is much easier to cut. I used a piece of phencepost for strength from the motor mount to the rear wing dowels which are supported by the post. I cut out the bottom of the post for radio. The battery is embedded in the foam in front of the wing to help the cg. (same location on model #1)

Tank is held in behind firewall and on top of post by a hatch. 1/16th ply on the bottom of the hatch foam. Screws are anchored into 3/8 x 1/2 dowel glued into the foam. The cowel is also attached to embedded dowel as I used 1/8 inch ply for the firewall.


The servos are taped with packing tape and then glued into the fuse with pu. Final weight is 3# 6oz

I did the paint covered by clear tape trick on a couple of small electric projects and liked it too.
