wing sticky tape
What kind of sticky tape works for the leading edge of wings?
I'm working on some streamer foamie combat for some folks in my club but don't want to use tanglefoot.
thx for any suggestions.

Rhino grip tape from Home depot. Be sure to put down some painters tape first so you'll be able to get it off when your done. It's almost as sticky as tanglefoot. It's clear and the paper backing comes off real easy which had been one problem with other tapes.

Re: wing sticky tape
Do you need sticky tape on the wings? We do not use "sticky" on our club combat, yes we get a few draps but still get plenty of cuts. Depending on the type of faom you are using there might be enough friction to break the streamer most of the time...

Re: wing sticky tape
That is what I have gone to and it is stickier than tanglefoot without the mess. You will not be able to pull off streamers once they get stuck on there. I have never had a drape using this stuff. Great for RCCA events.David Drowns wrote:Rhino grip tape from Home depot. Be sure to put down some painters tape first so you'll be able to get it off when your done. As for club combat, use Duck brand double sided tape. It is a "cloth" tape versus the vinyl tape. It stays sticky for a long time (for a month at least) and you can peel streamers off. I used this stuff on GNATS for club combat. Put one strip on and kept using it over and over until the wing got wrecked.

Re: wing sticky tape
Thx guys.
I already had some of the Duck sticky foam tape.
I can apply clear tape to the leading edge then the duck and reuse the blue release paper to cover up the tape for transport.
Using the clear packing tape first makes the duck tape removable if I want.
I'll try that first for some evaluation flights.
I'll have to give that Rhino grip tape a try. I'm getting Tanglefoot sure is a mess and looking for an acceptable alternative.

Re: wing sticky tape
Another thing to consider.. when I do fly combat, I cut my double sided sticky tape in half lengthwise. I get twice as much mileage that way, and I still get the streamer. You don't need a two inches wide of that stuff. Plus, depending on what you are flying, you might be able to shake off that streamer.
I use the Harbor Freight brand of double wide too, still got a few rolls..
FWIW...

Is the Rhino tape you're talking about the non slip tape used under rugs?

Re: wing sticky tape
Yes, it is a form of double sided tape without the "tape." There are strands of fibers that hold the adhesive together once the backing is removed. You cannot peel the stuff back off because there is really nothing that holds it together and it is super sticky because it is just adhesive.Max wrote:Is the Rhino tape you're talking about the non slip tape used under rugs?
David's link here is the stuff.

Re: wing sticky tape
Update: I've used this stuff in the last couple of contests and so far it is really nice to use and very effective. I did slice the roll with a razor knife and only use a one inch wide strip.
A couple notes of caution however. If you launch your plane by the wing be sure NOT to apply tape the area where your hand grabs. Ask me how I know.....much worse than tanglefoot.
Also, be sure to apply blue painters tape first, as this stuff is almost impossible to get off of the wing without a solvent like MEK

Home Depot sells 1 in wide (164 ft. roll) Rhino online:
http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R ... reId=10051
I tried this out at my last event:
http://www.findtape.com/product270/JVCC ... x=11&tid=7
It doesn't require laying down painters tape because it can be peeled off of the wing. I don't know about packing tape covered wings because I'm using vinyl covered wings. It is similar to what Don Veres has been using and it comes in various widths. It's sticky enough to catch streamers, but you can pull most of them back off. I did not have any drapes. I'm liking it so far.

Re: wing sticky tape
Knowing how some foamies grasp streamers gave me an idea a yesterday. Water noodles have a coarse, soft, durable foam and can be cut into strips. I think it might work like sandpaper in catching streamers but not be the safety hazard of sandpaper. You wouldn't need to remove it at the end of the day and would not have to re-apply after landing in cut grass. For my Gnats, I just put a notch at the tip of the wing and vertical stabilizer about one flute deep. If I get time, I think I will slice some noodles. Just need a target to try it on.
