Weight: Sign Vinyl vs Tape

Post by Dane McGee »

I'm posting a side by side weight comparison betweeen sign vinyl and tape. Here's what I came up with.

I am using Oracal 641 sign vinyl for covering on my newest warbird project. 1 square foot weighs 10 grams
I normally use 2.6 mil colored packing tape. 1 square foot weighs 6 grams
In the pic, I compare one sq ft the two materials. ( tape is double thickness for the pic)

What this means to me, is that on one of my 64" SSC Cobra wings, sign vinyl top and bottom is 1.04 oz heavier than tape.

For scale birds, I was thinking the vinyl may end up lighter if you don't have to paint it.
